Candles And Fire Safety

Decorative and fragranced candles may be an attractive addition to your home d?cor, but if used improperly, they can be a serious fire hazard. According to the National Fire Protection Association Journal article, "Candle Fires on the Rise", residential fires caused by candles have more than doubled over the past decade.

In addition to being a fire hazard, improperly used candles can generate a significant amount of soot. This soot can damage the walls, floors and ceilings of your home as well as your personal belongings.

According to a pilot study of candle fires by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), by far, most candle fires were caused by combustibles being too close to the candle. The next most common cause of candle fires was due to the candle falling over or being knocked over by wind, doors, children or pets.

Here are some safety tips:

Keep candles a minimum of 1 foot, in all directions, from flammable and combustible items such as curtains or bedding. Make sure curtains cannot be blown over the candle by wind. Place candles on secure furniture and out of the reach of children and pets. Only burn candles while under constant adult supervision. Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children. Trim wicks prior to each use to within ?-inch from the top of the candle. Extinguish the flame if it burns too close to the container side. Place burning candles away from drafts and vents. Do not allow candles to burn down to the bottom of their container. Stick candles should not be allowed to burn down below 2 inches from their holder. Extinguish all candles before leaving the house or when going to bed. Avoid burning candles for more than four hours at a time. Avoid walking while holding a burning candle. Do not move a glass container when the wax is liquid. Use a flashlight rather than a candle during power outages. Do not use a candle for light when fueling equipment such as a kerosene heater or lantern as the flame may ignite the fuel vapors. Secure candles in holders made of glass, ceramic, metal or other noncombustible material. Avoid using candles that have combustible materials embedded in them.

People always say that an ounce of prevention is way much better than a pound of cure. It's really true when it comes to fire - it's so destructive that in a blink of an eye it could take away all your properties, and even lives. So in order to protect yourself and family, here are prevention tips you should practice at home.

I. At Home

1. A burning lamp or candle should be placed away from the curtains and should be placed in a spot where the wind, pets and little children could not topple it. Never leave it unattended or else the fire might spread to the curtains. Put it out before sleeping.

2. Keep matches and lighters away from children's reach.

3. Flammable objects like gasoline and alcohol must be stored in a safe place. Cover flammable containers lightly.

4. Clean your roof and attic regularly. Get rid of leaves, wood shavings and other rubbish that could start fire.

5. When burning all the rubbish, make sure the fire is totally put out, and no smoe could be seen. Extinguish all smoldering coals.

6. Never, ever smoke in bed. After smoking, make sure the flame is out completely, without any presence of smoke.

7. Before retiring at night or leaving the house, inspect all the appliances and check if they're already turned off. Check all the wires, cables and tanks.

8. Educate your children on what to do in case of fire.

9. Always place your door keys somewhere near the door, or on the door itslef. Make sure every one in the family knows where the keys are. Better yet, make sure they have duplicates of it, so in case of fire, you'll be able to make your way out. Never mix the door keys with other keys.

II. In The Kitchen

1. When cooking, don't leave the stove unattended. Keep little children and flammable objects away from it.

2. Check your kitchen regularly for gas/oil leaks.

3. Avoid wearing loose clothes when cooking as it might catch fire.

4. Always use potholders when holding something hot, like frying pans or kettles.

5. Don't reach over a burning stove. You might get burned or your clothes might catch fire.

III. What To Do In Case Of Fire

When your clothes catch fire, don't panic. Immediately fall to the ground and roll to put out the fire. Running will only make the fire spread to other areas or parts of your clothes and will therefore make it intense. If this is not possible, use a blanket or towel.

When you're in a hotel, don't forget to check the fire exit's location. You'll never when know the unexpected occurs.

Cover your nose and mouth with a wet towel or hanky and crawl your way out if your room is filled with smoke.

Remember, it is always safer to know what you should do to keep accidents from happening, and know how to respond to the situation when it's there, than to panic due to ignorance. Take care!

Fireplace kits require regular maintenance to ensure high efficiency and safety. The hole at the top of the chimneys is covered by a chimney cap that prevents external matter from entering. This cap must be replaced in case it is damaged or missing.

For fireplace kits, an effective way to make sure that the outer mortar between the bricks is intact is by shining a flashlight down the chimney to look at the mortar inside. Crumbling mortar must be replaced. Metal chimneys should not consist of dented or rusted metal parts screws should not be missing.

It is a good idea to clean chimneys at frequent intervals as there may be deposits of creosote that can cause a dangerous chimney fire. Creosote is a hard and crust like produced during the incomplete combustion of wood. Soot too is a flammable deposit that needs to be removed if deposited on the chimney walls. If this deposit reaches a depth of about 1/8 inch, the chimney must be cleaned to remove these deposits.

It should always be kept in mind that fireplace kits should not be used as furnaces. Fireplaces should be used for short duration fire (approximately five hours). Fireplace coals can remain hot enough to start a fire up to three days after burning. Thus vacuum should never be used to clean up the ashes as there is a possibility that live coals may remain in those ashes. If there is smoke in the house even after eliminating the chimney debris, make sure the damper is open. If there is a large amount of smoke coming out of the chimney, it indicates that the wood is not burning completely. These are just some of the safety guidelines that a home owner should practice when it comes to fireplace kits.

Candles are no longer just source of fragrance or illumination, but they have become more of home d�cor item. Candles are designed in order to elevate certain moods and trends. Therefore, it is very important to take extra precautions when handling burning candles. Not burning candles is not a precaution, although it might seem perfect but not practical. The best thing to do is to put the candle in a heat resistance environment. There should be a distance of at least one meter or three feet between the burning candle and the surface above it.
